You're in Luck: Leadership & Career Growth Insights from My Recent Speaking Events đ
Success isnât just about luckâitâs about preparation, confidence, and the right leadership skills.
This past month, I had the incredible opportunity to speak at the Girls Academic Leadership Academy (GALA) as part of the Young Womenâs Career Conference. I led two powerful sessions designed to help young women prepare for the next steps in their careers:
â A workshop on interview skills â equipping students with the tools to present themselves with confidence and clarity.
â A leadership talk â sharing insights on what it means to be an effective leader in todayâs world.
It was an inspiring day filled with meaningful conversations, and I was honored to stand alongside other powerhouse women speakers.
One of the best parts of the day? Having lunch with some of the students and hearing about their dreams, goals, and next steps after GALA. It was amazing to listen to their ambitionsâsome heading off to college, others stepping into internships, and many eager to make their mark as future leaders.
key takeaways from the event
Throughout the day, I was reminded that preparing for opportunities is what creates success. Here are three important lessons from the event that apply to all of us - whether weâre just starting out or leading teams in the workplace.
1ď¸âŁ Preparation Meets Opportunity
Many students came into the interview skills workshop feeling nervous about introducing themselves. But after practicing, refining their answers, and learning what hiring managers look for, I could see their confidence grow in real time.
This is true for all professionalsâwhether youâre preparing for a job interview, a big presentation, or a leadership role. The more you prepare, the more "luck" you create for yourself. Opportunities donât just show upâyou create them by being ready.
2ď¸âŁ Confidence is Built, Not Given
During my leadership talk, I asked students what type of leader are you? Most did not realize there are many different types. But after completing my Leadership DNA questionnaire, they started to recognize their natural leadership stylesâwhether as a visionary, a strategist, or a team motivator.
Confidence isnât something we wait forâitâs something we build. It grows through action, self-awareness, and stepping into challenges even when we donât feel 100% ready.
3ď¸âŁ Leadership is About Influence, Not a Title
One of the biggest misconceptions about leadershipâwhether in school or in the workplaceâis that itâs reserved for those with a title. The truth? Leadership is about how you show up, how you support others, and how you take ownership of your journey.
Seeing these young women discover their own leadership potential was a powerful moment. It was a reminder that leadership isnât just about experienceâitâs about impact.
Whatâs Next?
As we move into the next quarter of the year, take a moment to ask yourself:
đĄ Are you preparing for opportunities, or waiting for them to come to you? đĄ How can you step into leadership in your own wayâwhether at work or in your community?
